I am about to give a speech on Voodoo dolls and am having a hard time understanding the how the pins are used. I have done a lot of research and it is hard to find detailed info. Please help me anyway possible.

First thing you need to know is this: Vodou is an African religion, Hoodoo is a Scottish Gypsy magic practice, Voodoo is the mixing of Vodou religion with Hoodoo magic.

Voodoo dolls do not originate from Vodou, Voodoo, or any other African religion, so most likely you are looking for references from the wrong sources. Poppets (as they were originally called) originated from Hoodoo, a Scottish Gypsy practice dating from the 1300s. The Hoodoo Doctors also known as Witch Doctors, used poppets to find and exterminate witches. To do this they would make a doll out of wax, than stick it full of hot pins. Next they would wander from house to house, until they found a person who was covered in boils. The Witch Doctor would take the boil covered person to the local magistrate (court house), show the person and the doll to the judge, claim that the boils had been caused by the doll as proof this person was a witch. The town would then execute said witch.

Cloth poppets filled with herbs, are used differently than wax poppets stuck with red hot pins. For example, Scottish Witch doctors would fill cloth poppets with chamomile and lavender, to place in a sick baby's crib to aid in sleep, or fill a poppet with rose buds to give to a young woman seeking a marriage proposal. The cloth dolls would be stuck with (cold, none heated) pins to aid in healing; for example pins would be stuck in the doll's belly, to "drive out" a stomach ache.

Scottish Traveller Gypsies brought this practice with them to the United States. Many of the people trying to free the slaves, were of Scottish descent, and would teach the slaves how to make poppets as a way to curse the slave owners making them sick, sick enough so the slaves would have time to escape, and as a way to heal the sick slaves. The slaves passed this knowledge on to other slaves, who began to adopt it into their Vodoun religious rituals, and the practice of Voodoo Dolls was born.

Remember Vodou is an African religion, Hoodoo is a Scottish Gypsy magic practice, Voodoo is the mixing of Vodou religion with Hoodoo magic. If you keep this in mind next time you do research, you'll find it easier to find sources of information next time.
